Glossary

Telecoms terms and abbreviations can be a little confusing, even for the most experienced engineers. Here’s a short glossary of some of the terms we use.

International Mobile Station Equipment Identity
The IMEI uniquely identifies GSM mobile terminals internationally - it's a serial number. Allocated by the manufacturer and registered in the network by operators in the EIR.
IMSI
International Mobile Subscriber Identity
When registering for a service on a GSM network a subscriber is assigned an IMSI number. Calls and services can only be used by a subscriber with a SIM card with a valid IMSI and IMEI number
INAP
Intelligent Network Application Part
SS7 Protocol enabling Intelligent Network services. Networks using INAP deliver easily programmable services on a per customer basis, such as follow-me, televoting, pre-paid, and credit card calls.
