Vikki Slade MP, discusses global telecom connectivity with local experts

MP Slade visits Squire Technologies 2025

UK businesses are solving global connectivity challenges and developing advanced 5G solutions, but deserve more government support, according to Vikki Slade MP.

Last week, Vikki Slade, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, visited Squire Technologies, a telecommunications software provider that moved to her constituency in 2024. There, she spoke to experts about the critical communications infrastructure components being developed in Dorset to solve global telecom connectivity challenges.

Vikki praised the efforts of Squire Technologies, stating: “The UK tech sector is one of our greatest strengths, and the government needs to support the export activities of local businesses.”

International exports are an important topic around the world. So, the MP was interested to know how businesses like Squire Technologies compete against other global brands.

Ben Teversham, Sales Manager at Squire Technologies, explained: “Generalist telecom suppliers like Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei pose a challenge to telecom networks.

“They offer bundle solutions that subsume networks, limit flexibility, and make telecom operators reliant on these brands for high-cost network modifications.

“Networks need flexibility to leverage new 5G technologies, especially with the rise of blockchain, AI and the like.”

Mr Teversham voiced concerns about the impact of “One-size-fits-all solutions” holding back innovation and network evolution. He outlined the role of government support in convincing more telecom operators to embrace multi-vendor networks. “We’re delivering for the UK economy with our ground-breaking technology that can unlock the full potential of 5G, but the single-vendor network dogma holds back innovation. The government needs to champion multi-vendor network proliferation if we’re going to showcase our technological superiority.”

Some operators are recognising the pitfalls of bundle offers. Squire Technologies’ CEO, Sanjeev Verma, described to the MP how companies like Vodafone and others have called on Squire Technologies to replace solutions from generalist vendors like ZTE and Huawei.

In a recent example, Roshan, Afghanistan’s leading communications provider, replaced Huawei’s network components with Squire Technologies’ solutions. Describing the project, Mr Verma highlighted the benefits for the operator: “Our components enhance connectivity and solidify geo-redundancy and make Roshan’s network easier to scale and leverage new technology.

Many developing nations are still using 2G and 3G and the expense of upgrading networks can be prohibitive. According to GSMA’s Global Economy Report 2025, 60% of network capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa is 2G or 3G. The digital gap is considerable when compared to North America and China, which have made 2G and 3G redundant.

The MP also expressed delight that companies like Squire Technologies are “…locating themselves in our county and employing local people.” adding, “…the government could do more to boost tech careers in areas outside big cities.”

Mr Verma outlined how local talent is a core part of the company’s strategy: “We focus on excellence, which is central to British products and services. That excellence comes from the staff you recruit.

Talking about the company recently relocating its head office, Mr Verma said: “Mid Dorset and North Poole is a great move for us as it enables us to enhance our local recruitment strategy by being closer to educational institutions.”
