The fault came from a routing issue in the emergency service communications system run by BT. Authorities instructed citizens to call the 101 non-emergency number instead of the 999 number while BT dealt with the fault.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two hours after the fault became evident, and on their second attempt, BT successfully implemented their backup service. People could call the 999 number again, but it took fifteen hours for BT to re-establish the primary system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BT had to complete callbacks to all the unconnected callers, checking if they needed help. When necessary, BT connected them to the correct emergency service or asked the police to investigate if they couldn\u2019t contact the caller. It took three days to finish the callbacks, and it is unclear how many people suffered because of the system failure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UK telecoms regulator is investigating BT, as questions are asked about their suitability for the job. If the company failed to maintain the critical communication system adequately, it could face a fine of millions of pounds. Lawsuits might also come from anyone who suffered unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The incident shows the ramifications for service users, responders, and the system operator when things go wrong.
