Every year, up to 100,000 people attend MWC Barcelona and the congregation includes some of the leading voices in communications and connectivity. Debates are going to be plentiful. Undoubtedly, speaker sessions will spark many of those debates, and some of the topics are likely to be about the future or non-future of NFTs, the pros and cons of an open API marketplace, and how developing nations can keep pace as developed nations eye up 6G. The latter topic clearly points to the overarching theme of the event Velocity – capturing ideas about the speed at which technology is revolutionising our industry.

Within the theme of Velocity, the event will revolve around five areas of innovation and how they’re shaping our industry:

• 5G Acceleration: Central to this area of innovation will be 5G’s evolution, whether 5G is suitable for everyone, and the emergence of 6G. Enhanced 5G delivery means mobile-led platforms are becoming smarter, creating new use cases and business models that will transform industries and enterprises. Ideas coming out of the conference about the growth potential of quantum computing, 6G, and efficient networks are certain to drive a lot of near-term business decisions.
• Reality+: The customer experience will likely become the focus of the customer journey as the virtual world expands over the next five years, multiplying touchpoints. Delegates will discover where the real opportunities lie in the metaverse and Web 3.0, and how immersive technology will alter business models.
• OpenNet: Leveraging 5G, IoT, Edge and Cloud capabilities with open API functionalities will help mobile operators to create a differentiated value proposition that delivers scalable next-generation digital services. While recognising the value of open networks, businesses will have to consider where to make partnerships and who will be responsible for maintaining the security of those open networks.
• FinTech: With the rise of NFTs (Non-fungible tokens), cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, there is no denying that fintech is taking on an entirely new meaning and revolutionising the financial industry. Digital innovations and human behaviour are shaping the next generation of finance, and business leaders will need to understand where opportunities lie and where gaps for fraud might occur.
• Digital Everything: A big discussion point during the conference will be around how Industry 4.0 will utilise IoT, manufacturing through the metaverse, accelerated 5G, and other digital resources to support real-world actions. This is a critical issue that business will have to grapple with as concerns grow about diminishing resources and our impact on the planet.
