How a Diameter Interworking Function Works

As 4G networks are rolled out into a hybrid mix of legacy 2G & 3G networks, operators deploy a Diameter Interworking Function or IWF to ensure their Diameter networks can successfully interconnect with multiple vendors, implementing multiple signalling standards.

Renna Mobile implements Squire Technologies Interworking Function to integrate a Diameter based OCS system

Oman’s fastest growing and leading mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) Renna Mobile have completed the first phase implementation of UK signalling experts Squire Technologies Interworking Function (IWF) as an instrumental part of their network transformation.

The solution provides a seamless and highly cost effective means for Renna Mobile to bridge the border between legacy SS7 and their Diameter based OCS/billing platform.

While meeting with Renna Mobile’s specific requirements as opposed to providing a costly vanilla solution; the virtualised interworking functions modular design now allows Renna Mobile to deliver further integration functionality in their network.

Group CTO Milan Jovancic commented “We required a flexible solution in delivering the specific functionality, meeting our needs and technical specifications while being on budget. Squire Technologies SVI-IWF Interworking Function delivered this. We will now use the SVI-IWF to leverage further integration in our network and our hosting operator.”

Interworking between different networks and systems is a constant thorn in the side for operators. Even if everyone adopts the same protocol, there can be differences in implementation. To enable these systems to communicate and exchange information and to support efficient service delivery, protocol conversion and interworking must take place.

SSEvery network and operator infrastructure is different. Vendors may implement standards in different ways – such differences may be perfectly permissible and different operators may choose to follow different versions of standards. Heterogeneity is the norm, despite the enthusiastic adoption of standards around the world.

The advent of LTE is adding to this problem as it uses an entirely different set of core standards for the control of signalling and subscriber services. Instead of the long-established SS7 signalling that is used in 3G, 2G and fixed networks, LTE uses Diameter signalling to perform the same functions. That’s great, but it means that such networks must be capable of interoperability with networks that support legacy SS7 signalling.

This problem is known and has been addressed through the development of an interworking specification between SS7 MAP and Diameter (3GPP TS 29.305). This provides a template for ensuring compatibility between common SS7 interfaces and their Diameter equivalents, as well as accounting for specific differences in the data conveyed.

We have a long history in implementing and deploying interworking solutions, helping operators to overcome network incompatibilities and to ensure subscribers can access different services in different circumstances – for example, when roaming into new networks or when dropping out of zones covered by one technology (e.g. LTE) into a legacy domain (e.g. 3G).
