Unless telecom operators make sustainable options clearer to consumers, they will not reach their climate targets. At the point of sale, a lack of obvious environmental benefits undermines environmentally friendly aspects of products and services. It falls to telecom operators to make the changes the environment needs and condition consumers to act more sustainably.

While progress continues to be made in reducing human-made environmental impacts, it isn’t happening fast enough. The 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change details how global temperatures must start decreasing by 2025 at the latest. Furthermore, they set out a target of reducing global temperatures by 43% by 2030.

Industries face a challenge in balancing capitalist stakeholder demands, consumer and technology trends, and environmental obligations. However, telecos are leading sustainability initiatives, reducing emissions in substantial ways when compared to other industries.

What is the state of telecom environmental sustainability?

GSMA’s Mobile Net Zero 2025 report argues that the mobile industry is making better progress than many other industries on combating climate change. Between 2019 and 2023, emissions from mobile network operators fell by 8%. However, operators must take bold action if they are to achieve targets while delivering more connectivity at faster speeds.

Alix Jagueneaum, Head of External Affairs at GSMA, contends that focusing on Scope 3 emission reduction is critical. 70% of telecom emissions are Scope 3 value chain emissions, connected to consumers and suppliers.

Thankfully, 89% of operators reporting to the Climate Disclosure Project are tackling climate risks in their direct and value chain operations. So, there is hope. For now, the other 11% are just focusing on emissions in their direct operations.

There are further positive signs in device waste. Global smartphone sales are slowing. In part, this is due to a lack of differentiation and consumers focusing on value for money. On average, phone upgrades now occur every 3.6 years, an increase from the 24-month rate in 2015.

Unfortunately, the change in consumer behaviour isn’t happening fast enough, and device differentiation through AI innovations could upend the trend. Additionally, according to GSMA, waste from electronic items like mobile phones is expected to continue increasing at least until 2030.

Despite decades of climate change awareness, PwC Global, the UN, and other experts believe that environmental strategies aren’t moving quickly. The planet is still heading for a climate catastrophe. This raises the questions “Do consumers really want sustainable options?” and “How can telecom operators do more?”

Do consumers really want sustainable options?

Yes, but they tend to forget them when the environmental impact isn’t immediately evident. If you are offered your morning beverage in a plastic, single-use coffee cup or a recyclable one, you are likely to choose the recyclable option.

Unfortunately, if consumers can’t see that vivid choice, they will invariably ignore sustainable product or service features. So, consumers will typically choose devices based on cost and features unless the environmental benefits are made very apparent.

Research suggests that telecom operators must make sustainable options clearer to consumers. Taking the ‘reusable coffee cup’ approach when designing offers could start to change customer behaviours.

In the case of supplier and vendor value chain emission scenarios, operators have considerably more leverage. By collaborating, suppliers, vendors, and telecom operators can reduce other Scope 3 emissions. The challenge lies in satisfying stakeholder demands and environmental obligations. Thankfully, in this area, several options are available to telecom operators.

4 ways to make a telecoms operation more energy efficient and sustainable.

Beyond the obvious means of reducing emissions like renewable energy, operators have a range of sustainable options to choose from. Here are just a few:

1. Embrace virtualisation

By deploying virtual infrastructure instead of physical infrastructure, telecom operators could reduce energy costs and emissions by 50% or more. Additionally, virtualisation improves network flexibility, enabling better resource use and easier scaling and upgrading.

2. Extend the life of mobile devices.

Telecom operators can cut Scope 3 emissions from manufacturing and transport by minimising SIM usage and leveraging eSIMs. Utilising eSIMs helps extend the life of devices and can also reduce plastic waste from traditional physical SIMs.

3. Extend the life of networks.

Operators can utilise network solutions to make their legacy systems more efficient and forward and backwards-compatible. By using Interworking Functions and solutions like DSCs, the life of legacy systems can be extended. Carbon emissions can be cut through network efficiency and avoiding overhauls, both of which can save operators money.

4. Share networks

The benefits of network sharing depend on whether operators utilise passive or active sharing, and to what degree they embrace it. The most environmental benefits come from passive sharing, such as sharing base site energy sources, backhaul transport infrastructure, etc. Environmental benefits decrease in active sharing but are supplemented by savings on operational and capital expenditure.

Through network sharing, operators can also expand coverage more easily, improve connection reliability, reduce latency, and more. It just depends on how much operators are willing to integrate their operations.

These options show that there are many ways to achieve environmental targets. It’s up to operators to decide if they want to reinvest their savings in climate action initiatives or pass them on to customers with emission-free contracts, for example.
