It’s 20 years since MWC Barcelona started. Few of MWC Barcelona’s 2006 keynote speakers could foresee today’s immense technological achievements. Yet, 2006 was a pivotal year in technology.

In 2006, millions of people started using social media platforms. Today, social media dominates our lives and is the first source of news for many people. The Nintendo Wii was launched in 2006, pioneering immersive gaming that has led to extraordinary VR experiences.

Twenty years ago, scientists were working on helping robots sense objects. Today, robots are a common feature of MWC Barcelona, and their development is astounding.

Celebrating 20 years of MWC Barcelona

For 20 years, MWC Barcelona has maintained its status as the premier telecommunication networking event, providing some prophetic moments. One such moment was in 2011, when Eric Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chair, likened future mobile phones to pocket supercomputers.

Some false starts have occurred, such as the metaverse and RCS. The latter took over a decade to establish itself, and living virtual lives in the metaverse became a joke.

However, the event is also a platform to witness amazing technology up close. Some of the technologies at MWC Barcelona include concept flying cars, gaming consoles, robots, and the occasional mobile phone.

Telecom challenges seldom change

As delegates and exhibitors, Squire Technologies has attended the event for over 10 years, and we’ve seen lots of changes. Though one thing remains unchanged.

Operators still face the same challenges they faced a decade ago: interworking failures, traffic management issues, and thin margins.

Sony, Google, Apple, and others can have all the robots, AI, and talking fridges they like. If networks are congested and too complicated to get a signal through easily, all those gizmos are just dead weight.

Additionally, if it’s too expensive to manage their devices across networks, operators won’t be overly happy.
